He was professor of History of Roman Law in the universities of Rome (1974) and Macerata (1979), then professor of history of military institutions at the Catholic University of Milan (1989-2010). In 2006 he donated his Military Library of about 25,000 books and documents to the Civic Library of Varallo (Piedmont). He created a Digital Military Library of some 70,000 books and documents. Since 2004 he is President of the Italian Society for Military History.
