{"bio": {"type": "/type/text", "value": "El\u00edas Sn\u00e6land J\u00f3nsson was born in Bjarnarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur in Strandas\u00fdsla on January 8, 1943. He studied at the LO-school at S\u00f6rmarka in Norway after finishing his education in Iceland, and then became a journalist for the Sunm\u00f6re Arbeideravis in Aalesund in 1963. He moved back to Iceland, and became a journalist for the newspapers T\u00edminn and V\u00edsir. J\u00f3nsson also edited the weekly N\u00fd \u00fej\u00f3\u00f0m\u00e1l from 1974- 1976, the daily T\u00edminn from 1981\u20131984, was co-editor of DV newspaper 1984\u20131997 and the editor of Dagur newspaper 1997\u20132001. The last decade he has worked as a writer and freelance journalist.\r\nEl\u00edas Sn\u00e6land J\u00f3nsson first sent forward the short story \"Hvernig skyldi \u00fea\u00f0 vera?\" (\"Wonder what it's like?\") which was published in 1984 in a collection of short stories for teenagers. He has written novels, one of which has also been published in German, plays, scripts for documentaries, non-fiction books about Icelandic history in the Twentieth century and a number of books for children and young people. \r\nHis play, Fj\u00f6rbrot fuglanna (\"V\u00f6gel im Todeskampf\") (Birds in Deaththroes) was staged by Theater Junge Generation in Dresden, Germany in 1999-2001. \r\nEl\u00edas Sn\u00e6land J\u00f3nsson received the Icelandic Children's Book Award for his book Brak og brestir (Deep in the Glacier) in 1993, and his book N\u00e1v\u00edgi \u00e1 hvalasl\u00f3\u00f0 (Lords of the Sea) from 1998 was on the IBBY honour list for 2000\u20132002. \r\nEl\u00edas Sn\u00e6land J\u00f3nsson lives in K\u00f3pavogur. He is married to Anna Krist\u00edn Brynj\u00falfsd\u00f3ttir, writer and Latin teacher.
