Opening a new line of attack on an old pedagogic problem, the statistical analysis developed in this text offers a truly elementary approach to primarily chemical thermodynamics. This analysis wholly supplants the Carnot analysis that students find so forbiddingly difficult. And with Carnot there disappears also the entire mass of work calculations which, though traditional, are actually of no use whatever tot eh vast majority of working chemists.
