{"description": "\"The Cask of Amontillado\" (sometimes spelled \"The Casque of Amontillado\" [a.mon.ti.\u02c8\u029da.\u00f0o]) is a short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe, first published in the November 1846 issue of Godey's Lady's Book. The story, set in an unnamed Italian city at carnival time in an unspecified year, is about a man taking fatal revenge on a friend who, he believes, has insulted him. Like several of Poe's stories, and in keeping with the 19th-century fascination with the subject, the narrative revolves around a person being buried alive \u2013 in this case, by immurement. As in \"The Black Cat\" and \"The Tell-Tale Heart\", Poe conveys the story from the murderer's perspective.", "covers": [11887418, 8549085, 2938359, 9011868, 11619049, 10855824, 12375211, 12752076], "key": "/works/OL41016W", "authors": [{"author": {"key": "/authors/OL28127A"}, "type": {"key": "/type/author_role"}}], "title": "The Cask of Amontillado", "subjects": ["Children's fiction", "Classic Literature", "Crime", "Detective and mystery stories", "Fiction", "Horror stories", "Juvenile fiction", "Revenge", "Literature, study and teaching", "Fiction, horror", "Fiction, general"], "type": {"key": "/type/work"}, "links": [{"title": "The Cask of Amontillado - Wikipedia", "url": "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cask_of_Amontillado", "type": {"key": "/type/link"}}, {"title": "The Cask of Amontillado - The Poe Museum", "url": "https://poemuseum.org/the-cask-of-amontillado/", "type": {"key": "/type/link"}}, {"title": "xroads.virginia.edu/~Hyper/POE/cask", "url": "http://xroads.virginia.edu/~Hyper/POE/cask.html", "type": {"key": "/type/link"}}, {"title": "Poe's Short Stories \u201cThe Cask of Amontillado\u201d (1846 ...", "url": "https://www.sparknotes.com/lit/poestories/section11/", "type": {"key": "/type/link"}}, {"title": "edgarallanpoe.nl/the-cask-of-amontillado/", "url": "https://www.edgarallanpoe.nl/the-cask-of-amontillado/", "type": {"key": "/type/link"}}, {"title": "\"The Cask of Amontillado\" - Cliffs Notes", "url": "https://www.cliffsnotes.com/literature/p/poes-short-stories/summary-and-analysis/the-cask-of-amontillado", "type": {"key": "/type/link"}}, {"title": "eapoe.org/works/info/pt063.htm", "url": "https://www.eapoe.org/works/info/pt063.htm", "type": {"key": "/type/link"}}], "subject_people": ["Montresor", "Fortunato", "Luchresi", "Lady Fortunato"], "excerpts": [{"excerpt": "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.", "comment": "first sentence", "author": {"key": "/people/seabelis"}}], "subject_times": ["Carnival"], "latest_revision": 21, "revision": 21, "created": {"type": "/type/datetime", "value": "2009-10-15T08:15:47.909262"}, "last_modified": {"type": "/type/datetime", "value": "2026-01-19T10:15:22.122280"}}
