"This book presents an approach to couples therapy that differs from conventional views in two important ways: (1) it rejects the traditional image of troubled partners as gratifying regressive impulses and seeking exploitive control and views them as deprived of the minimal satisfaction and control necessary to make a relationship livable; (2) instead of helping partners negotiate and compromise, it encourages them to incorporate their conflicts into the relationship."
