Two down-at-heel aristocrats and sisters arrive in London in 1756 looking for husbands. One marries a gambling rogue whilst the other marries an older man. When the gambling rogue is thrown into the debtors' prison his wife is left to follow her own romantic notions to their inevitable conclusion.
